Community-Based Instruction

Skills learned in therapy sessions need to transfer to the real world to be truly meaningful. Community-based instruction takes ABA therapy out of the home and into places like grocery stores, parks, restaurants, and public transit — where your child can practice skills in the settings they’ll actually use them. For families in Miami-Dade County, this means learning happens across the community your child lives in.

Why Community-Based Skills Matter

A child who can follow instructions at home may struggle to do the same in a busy grocery store. A child who greets family members may freeze when meeting a new person at the park. Generalization — applying skills across different settings, people, and situations — is one of the biggest challenges in ABA therapy, and community-based instruction directly addresses it.

What Community Sessions Look Like

Your RBT takes your child into the community to practice specific goals in real-world contexts. This might include ordering food at a restaurant, waiting in line at a store, crossing the street safely, playing at a park with other children, or navigating a library. Each outing has a clear purpose tied to your child’s treatment plan, and data is collected throughout the session.

Safety and Supervision

Community-based sessions are carefully planned with safety as the top priority. Your BCBA selects appropriate community settings based on your child’s current skill level and identifies target skills in advance. Your RBT maintains close supervision at all times and uses established safety protocols. As your child builds skills and confidence, sessions gradually increase in complexity.
